Elden Ring Guide: Spirit Ashes Explained

Elden Ring can be a particularly lonely experience if you don’t want to summon other players, but there’s another option – Spirit Ashes.

Elden Ring FAQ: Every Guide You’ll Need

For the first time in a Soulsborne game, Elden Ring lets you summon a spectral companion to assist you in tougher fights. They’re handled through an item called ‘Spirit Ashes’, come in multiple variants, and can be upgraded.

Elden Ring – What are Spirit Ashes?

Spirit Ashes allow you to summon in your own companion to make those tricky boss fights a little easier. To call them in, you’ll first need to find yourself a Spirit Ashes drop. They can be found in numerous places, so you’re bound to come across some sooner or later. The most common places are in item loot drops, finishing questlines, or rewards from defeating bosses.

Once you’ve found a Spirit Ash, you’ll also need a Spirit Calling Bell. This can be received from Renna the Witch, who you meet for the first time at the Church of Elleh Site of Grace at night. Alternatively, you can purchase one at the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold. Once acquired, you’re all set to use Spirit Ashes.

Well, mostly. Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring can only be summoned when you’re nearby a Rebirth Monument. These are small, knee high obelisks that can be seen nearby every boss arena. They’re also dotted around the map close to popular points of interest. Spirit Ashes cost a fixed amount of FP to cast, and you can only summon them once per Rebirth Monument. Once cast, you’ll need to reset the Calling Bell at a Site of Grace.

When summoned, the spawned creature (or creatures) will act as their own entity within the world. They have their own health bars, which means they’re susceptible to damage, but also healing spells. While they probably won’t deal enough damage to win a boss fight for you, they’ll most certainly distract a boss while you get a few good hits in.

How to upgrade Spirit Ashes

If you’d like to lean more heavily on Spirit Ashes, then you can upgrade them to be more powerful. To do so, you’ll need to meet Roderika and complete her side quest. She’s located in the Scavenger’s Shack in Stormhill, and will move to Roundtable Hold after you defeat Margit the Fell Omen.

Then, you’ll need to collect some materials depending on how far you’d like to upgrade your Spirit Ashes. For basic upgrades, you’ll need to find Grave Gloveworts. For elite Spirit Ashes, you’ll need Ghost Glovewarts.

Upgrading Spirit Ashes will improve the health, attack power, and defence of your allies. In some instances, upgrading can also increase the number of allies summoned at once. Overall, Spirit Ashes are definitely something that you should look to use while playing Elden Ring. Upgrading them will also prove significantly helpful.
