Skyrim Guide: How To Join The Companions

The Companions are the fighter’s guild of Skyrim. They are a band of fierce warriors who pride themselves on being some of the strongest fighters in all of Skyrim. There are a couple of ways you can go about joining up with the Companions, but regardless it is a pretty straightforward process. Here is our guide on how to join the Companions in Skyrim.

There are two ways to first meet the members of the guild. Their home is Jorrvaskr, a huge building in Whiterun close to the entrance to Dragonreach. You will have to head there to join up, but it is possible to meet the Companions before that. On your way to Whiterun, you might encounter them fighting a giant at Pelagia Farm. If you want to get in good with the Companions, it would be a good idea to lend a hand. Doing so will win you some initial favour with the Companions. If you show up too late, which is very possible because they can make quick work of that giant, you can still get an invite. Speak to Aela the Hunter in either scenario and she will invite you to meet them at Jorrvaskr.

The Companions are a notoriously insular group, as you will come to learn. At Jorrvaskr, ask around and you will be directed to Kodlak Whitemane, Harbinger of the Companions. Ask Kodlak about joining the group and you will begin on your journey. Your first test is a fight with Vilkas, a Companion who opposes letting new people in. Defeating him will earn his respect, and he will give you your next task.

Vilkas asks the player to bring a sword to Eorland Gray-Mane to be sharpened. Eorland is the master blacksmith of the Skyforge, an ancient forge that is said to produce the best steel in all of Tamriel. While there, Eorland will teach the Dragonborn a bit about the history of the Companions. When he has finished, he will give you a shield and ask that you deliver it to Aela the Huntress. Finishing these errands will lead to your initiation.

At this point, the Companions will have decided to allow you to join their ranks. You will be given a bed and somewhere to store your stuff, and you can begin taking quests from the Companions. Completing these quests can lead to powerful rewards. Being a top dog in the Companions gives you access to their considerable power and resources. However, as you work with the Companions you will begin to realise there is an inner circle within this inner circle. This inner circle is known as, The Circle

Some spoilers here, so if you’d rather avoid that, stop reading now! You already know everything you need to get started, and what I am about to discuss is something you will come across naturally if you keep working with the Companions. Last warning!

The Circle have a secret, and that secret is that they are all werewolves. You will likely discover this when a werewolf hunter from the Silver Hand attacks Farkas. After witnessing this, you can inquire about werewolves and, after some progress, become one yourself. With trust built, the Circle give you the opportunity to join their group. To do so you must become a werewolf. You don’t have to go down this route in order to be a full member of the Companions, but a decision must be made one way or the other to progress.
