Tom Hiddleston has recently spoken about Loki’s bisexuality, saying that he thinks there’s still “further to go” with it.
Being the god of mischief, it’s unsurprising that Loki as a show gets up to a few hijinks here and there. It introduced Sylvie, an alternate universe version of Loki that ends up becoming a bit more than that. One of the most important parts of the show though is the fact that Loki was confirmed as bisexual, like his comic-counterpart, but it was only a subtle nod.
Now in an interview with The Guardian, Hiddleston has spoken about how he believes that Loki’s sexuality has room for growth. “We all wanted to retain the integrity of the character – I wanted to make sure we didn’t lose the bits that people loved, while doing something new,” said Hiddleston.
“I also hope Loki coming out as bisexual was meaningful to people who spotted it. It was a small step, and there’s further to go. But it was definitely important to all of us.“
It’s great to see Hiddleston acknowledge that there is further to go with Loki’s bisexuality. Queer characters are basically non-existant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It wasn’t until Black Panther that the series had a film with a black lead, and Black Widow was the first film with a woman lead, despite the character being around since practically the beginning of the franchise. So all in all the MCU is quite behind on most aspects of representation.
Thankfully, Loki is getting a second season, meaning there is room to explore that aspect of his character. But we’ll have to wait and see if anything does come of it or not.
