The Best RPG Games You Should Be Playing Right Now

Here are the rest of our choices for the best RPG games you can play right now!

6. Dragon Age: Origins

Become a Grey Warden in Dragon Age: Origins, Bioware’s dark heroic fantasy that pits the hero against an innumerable horde of subterranean horrors. As the first game in the Dragon Age series Origins has a lot of worldbuilding to do, and it does it shockingly well: by the end of the game, your choices have consequences (thanks, Morrigan) and you feel invested in the outcomes of your companions. Combat is more strategic than the sequels, thanks to its position as spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate. An absolute playground for your Chaotic Neutral alignment.

Persona 5 Royal

7. Persona 5 Royal

Experience Tokyo through the eyes of a misfit bunch of thieves and rebels in Persona 5 Royal. The latest and greatest entry in the Persona series, this is a game about overcoming your limits within modern society, while also exploring the psyche of the weird and wonderful people that you meet along the way. An undeniably stylish RPG with a unique art direction, wild acid jazz soundtrack, and enough good coffee to make you jealous. Play the enhanced Royal edition when it hits current gen consoles and PC later this year.

the outer worlds

8. The Outer Worlds

Set in an alternate future where space colonisation is largely the property of megacorporations, The Outer Worlds has everything players love about space operas: distant star systems, FTL travel, and morally grey mad scientists. This is one of the best RPGs for fans of Firefly or Stargate, and it’ll definitely scratch that scoundrel itch the newer Fallout games just don’t quite hit. Combat is definitely action heavy, with skill trees dropping archetypes like might and magic to the appropriately-themed Science, Medical, and Engineering. Oh, and there’s a shrink ray, because of course there is.

Pillars of Eternity II Deadfire

9. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

An isometric RPG in the style of Baldur’s Gate, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is the incredibly successful sequel to the original 2015 RPG, itself a spiritual successor to the very best D&D games of the 2000s. And this is a game rich in that tradition, with seafaring exploration, deep class-based gameplay and a party of murder hobos (or paragons of virtue, if you’re boring). Pillars of Eternity II is an introspective, story-driven RPG where you define the protagonist’s reactions based on your choices, in a compelling gameplay loop with enough depth for hundreds of hours of gameplay.

yakuza like a dragon

10. Yakuza: Like A Dragon

Take a step back from fantasy and swing for your next fight in Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Sega’s 2020 JRPG reinvention of the venerable Yakuza series. Based on Japan’s criminal underworld and with lovingly reimagined takes on the country’s seediest districts, this is an RPG brimming with spectacle, and like the very best of its series the game doesn’t take itself seriously. At all. Turn-based combat is improved by the hilarious twists on jobs: think Homeless Guy and Idol instead of White Mage or Knight. Plucky protagonist Kasuga is still a Hero, of course.
