It seemed like this day would never come but it has been revealed that Shrek 5 may finally be on the cards. Here’s everything we know so far.
This news comes after Illumination CEO Chris Meledrandri spoke to Variety about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. Despite the conversation mainly focusing on tomorrow’s release of the Mario movie, talk soon turned to the much-loved Shrek franchise.
A possible Shrek 5
Meledrandri is the founder of Illumination but is also a Dreamworks creative partner who worked on the Shrek movies. When asked about a possible Shrek 5, he had this to say:
“We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”
The cast he is referring to consists of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and more. This would be the perfect time for the fifth instalment considering Shrek Forever After was released all the way back in 2010.
Following in Puss’s footprints
This could also be the perfect time for a new Shrek instalment considering the success of the latest Puss in Boots: The Last Wish movie. The movie that follows the feline we originally met in the Shrek series grossed almost $500 million at box office.
If not Shrek 5, fans have also been calling for spin-off movies, especially one dedicated to the much-loved Donkey. This is something Eddie Murphy also supports.
“You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey,” Murphy said in an interview with Etalk.
As this news has just dropped, there is no further information. However, knowing that it is reportedly in the works is good enough for now.
