Announced via both the Bethesda Game Studios and Xbox Twitter accounts, the donation will help the charity rehome pets in need of a loving home. At the time of writing it would appear that Microsoft and Bethesda’s generosity and boosting of awareness to Montgomery County Humane Society has caused their website to crash. Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, it is back up.

“River was one-of-a-kind. She was patient, sweet, and a true inspiration. Consider joining @Xbox and us to help some pets in need to find their forever homes in honour of River: https://beth.games/3qU3AxH

Tribute To River

Last week, River’s owner, Fallout 4’s Joel Burgess, paid tribute to his canine companion on Twitter. According to the lead designer, River’s legacy of love is what makes Dogmeat such an iconic character:

“Dogmeat is a tether. He grounds you in the world, will always stand by you, lead you to your family, and anticipate your needs. He wants you to be safe and happy.

“In other words, he loves you. And if love is River’s legacy, I am contented.”

Hopefully, Microsoft and Bethesda’s generous donation will inspire gamers to contribute to a great cause. While River was lucky enough to live an extraordinary life, there are other animals out there in need of a second chance. Therefore, by donating to your local animal charity, you can help less fortunate pets live better life. Who knows, perhaps one of them will go on to star in an iconic video game!

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ANIMAL CHARITY

In memory of River, Joel Burgess has also asked fans to consider either volunteering or donating to the ASPCAHumane Society International, or any other local animal charity. If you’re in the UK, you could also consider donating to Dogs Trust or the RSPCA (SSPCA in Scotland).
