A new PS5 redesign will come with a detachable disc drive next year. That’s at least according to a recent rumour.
Reports of an improved PS5 console have been making the rounds for months. In fact, Sony has already very subtly made new batches of PlayStation 5 consoles a little lighter.
However, the most recent improvement report is courtesy of renowned video games journalist, Tom Henderson.
Writing for a new publication called Insider Gaming, Henderson claims that the new PS5 redesign will feature the option of a detachable UHD Blu-ray disc drive.
The drive is said to be detachable via an additional USB-C port at the back of the console. However, the drive will not be required for those that want to remain completely digital.
If you have fears that the console might look unsavoury with a dangling disc drive, fear not. Henderson says that the detachable disc drive will seamlessly apply to the console so that it looks like the original hardware.
Two new PS5 bundles will arrive
Henderson also claims that the new PS5 redesign will arrive in September 2023.
Furthermore, PlayStation 5 console bundles are also reported to include the Digital Edition or another bundled with the detachable disc drive. Additionally, the disc drive will also be available to purchase separately.
Henderson’s sources apparently claim that despite the PS5 having a redesign, there will be no changes made to the console in terms of performance.
This means that this updated console will not be a PS5 Pro. However, we can assume that this redesign will also be a little lighter.
Will the new PS5 instantly sell out?
Despite releasing in 2020, getting hold of a new PlayStation 5 from a reputable retailer at the regular RRP is not as easy as it should be.
Thankfully Sony is reported to be producing 18.5 million units of the new model and 12 million units of the current model.
