Redfall will require an online connection even for single-player

It has been confirmed by Bethesda that their upcoming title Redfall will require an internet connection for both single-player and multiplayer modes.

This news comes as the result of a Redfall Q&A post courtesy of Bethesda. The question states “Will playing Redfall require an online connection for single-player as well as co-op?” The reply reads, “A persistent internet connection is required for single-player and co-op.”

As a result, players must stay connected even if they wish to attempt vampire-hunting alone. For those who wished to play via a Steam Deck, this will no longer be an option away from home.

An explanation

This perhaps may not come as a surprise when many new games have taken this stance. Many developers have chosen to use DRM in an attempt to stop piracy and copyright infringement.

DRM games require an internet connection which allows a game to read whether it has a license or not. Although this is helpful for developers, it will have a great impact on how player’s can experience the game.

What else is required to play?

The Q&A also states that players will require a Besthesda.net connection in order to play. This comes at zero cost but is another required step to get into Redfall. Although single-player will need an online connection, only those who wish to attempt multiplayer will need an Xbox Gold subscription (which is currently £6.99/month in the UK).

This news also follows a recent leak that revealed Redfall was in ‘rough shape.’ The leak courtesy of an Xbox leaker claims the game “probably should use more quality control.” However, with the game set to release on May 2 after already receiving delays, time is running out for it to be performance ready.
