I used to be a speedrunner like you.

Skyrim Player Beats Game In Under 73 Minutes Without Glitches

Thanks to some new speedrunning tech, a speedrunner has beaten Skyrim in under 73 minutes without using glitches (thanks, TheGamer).

Skyrim is a massive game, with a whole host of factors to consider. Having now been out for 10 years (and many, many re-releases), the game has seen numerous iterations of the main quest glitchless run.

But now, the new world record has managed to shave off two minutes of time. The speedrunner nucular achieved the feat in Skyrim, achieving a time of 1:12:15. This beats out the previous world record, which nucular also set, of 1:14:07. Nucular was able to do this thanks to some new speedrunning tech established by fellow Skyrim runner TODDs_Telemedien.

Essentially, the time save comes during the quest A Cornered Rat. In this quest, you need to enter the Riften sewers to meet Esbern. If you play your cards right, you can get a guard to follow you to the meeting. And once you’re finished, you’ll be teleported straight to jail. This skips the need to leave the sewers yourself, as the game does the work for you.

Two minutes might not sound like much, but in speedruns, it sometimes comes down to the millisecond. Games like the original Super Mario Bros. literally do come that close. So any amount of time saved could mean the difference between a world record or not.

With the recent release of the Anniversary Edition of Skyrim, it’s likely we’ll be seeing some more improvements to the run at some point. Maybe someone will find a way to factor in the newly added fishing rod.
