This week, Wyrdren Games has shown off its upcoming magic school visual novel Spellbound: The Magic Within at W.A.S.D. in London.
Spellbound: The Magic Within is an interactive visual novel where you jump into the world of magic and witchcraft as a new resident of the town of Witcherley. After learning about your own magical potential, your family sends you off to train.
“Spellbound is a branching narrative all about witchcraft, mystery, and exploring your powers,” Game Director Sally Sheppard told GameByte in her own words.
SPELLBOUND: THE MAGIC WITHIN AT WASD
During our demo playthrough, we were tasked with creating a character before anything else. What immediately stood out is just how inclusive and diverse all the options were here. Wyrdren Games understands that making a game that can include anyone isn’t just limited to gender options and a few skin colours. Spellbound includes options for multiple body types, decent Black hair, and the choice of different pronouns.
“Our mission statement at Wyrdren is to leave the world better than we found it,” Sheppard continued. “In gaming, we want to make sure we’re always thinking about our players, and being extremely inclusive rather than exclusive.
“When we add features to the game it’s always about inviting more people to the table. We have a very diverse character creator, which includes pronoun choices. We’ve also incorporated community feedback so we have stuff like binders, hearing aids, and skin textures. We have so many options that players can really feel like themselves in the game.”
Spellbound: The Magic Within really looks like it was created by, and for, the Harry Potter generation who are after a gaming experience that welcomes in as many players as it possibly can.
