A good step forward!

The Sims 4 Adds Custom Pronouns Feature

The Sims 4 pronouns update is finally here, letting players fully customise their Sims pronouns in whatever way they like.

Back in January, The Sims 4 developer Maxis showed off the work it was doing on adding customisable pronouns into the game. The livestream showing the feature gave an in-development look at how it would work. And now it’s officially in the game, finally letting players specify pronouns in the game however they might want to.

EA shared a post going into more detail about how the new custom pronouns feature will work, too. “We first announced that we were looking into this feature last year after hearing feedback from the community,” reads the post. “However this is something that has actually been on our minds for quite some time before we announced it formally.”

The post continues, explaining how the team approached researching how to make the pronouns feature work. “Ultimately where we landed was to create a system that allows for pronouns to be defined by the player and have those then be used in multiple different text strings.

what else did the sims team do?

As well as this, the team worked with the It Gets Better Project and GLAAD to learn more about how pronouns are used. And through this research, Maxis found the ways that binary gender was present in the game. Which allowed the developers to work on making the feature a reality.

Now, players will be able to start with a basis of they/ them, she/her, he/ him, or they can opt for custom pronouns. For custom pronouns, you’ll be able to put in different versions depending on grammatical context. And there are even example sentences so players can be fully sure they’re using the pronouns correctly.

Sims 4 Fans Are Disappointed With The Latest Content Roadmap

At the moment, this feature is only available in English, but there are plans to expand this feature. Other languages use pronouns in other ways, so hopefully Maxis will be able to properly navigate more gender inclusive language across the board.

This update is really great for LGBTQIA+ fans who might want to use something like a neopronoun. If you aren’t familiar with them, neopronouns are a new category of pronouns that are used to express gender in a way traditional pronouns can’t. So this update will really allow for some flexibility in that department.

You can buy The Sims 4 from only £12.95.
