Latest PS5 And PS4 Update Brings In Some Great New Features

A new PS5 and PS4 system software update has been released, bringing with it a host of new features.

Over on the PlayStation blog, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience Hideaki Nishinio outlined some of the new features in today’s update PS5 and PS4 system software update.

One of the big new features that has been fully added as part of the update is the ability to create or join open and closed parties. This was a feature that had a beta test last month. With an open party, friends can see and join the party without needing an invite. As well as friends of other party members. Alternatively, a closed party will require an invite.

UK and US based users will also be able to try out a voice command feature. This feature will let users “find and open games, apps, and settings, as well as control media playback with their voice.” But currently this is only available in English, hence UK and US based players only.

There are also some PS App and PS Remote Play enhancements coming. Starting today, players will be able to create or join parties through the PS App. And the UI of the app has been updated to make accessing friends, parties, and messaging features easier.

PS Remote Play mobile app users now have access to a dark mode setting. As well as new screen reader languages for iOS and Android. These include Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Greek, Thai, and Chinese (traditional and simplified).

And the blog also touched on an upcoming update that will introduce variable refresh rate support for PS5. “On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output,” reads the blog post.

This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing.” Games that have already been released will be able to benefit from this update through a patch. And VRR can be added as an option for PS5 games that don’t support it too.
